Mary was one of six victims of the fire that gutted the Germantown Community Centre, Haines and Morton Streets, in the heart of Germantown's Little Italy.

She and five other girls were trapped on a third-floor balcony, which was enclosed by wire mesh. The wire, incidentally, was designed to keep the children from falling into the street.

The girls screamed for helped and the firefighters did all they could to cut through the mesh but by the time they did all six girls were unconscious, overcome by smoke and burned over more than half their little bodies.

Frances Pifani died before reaching Germantown Hospital. The other five victims died over the course of the next two days.

Thousands of people from all over the city went to the victims' homes to pay their respects and thousands more lined the streets of Chelten Avenue in Germantown for the victims' funerals.

The other five victims were: Sylvia Bressi, Mary Dima, Genevieve Di Pompeo, Frances Pifani, and Ida Visco.
