Jesse was killed by a train near Bowie, TX.

From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Sunday, May 15, 1910, Sec. 1, p. 9:

The boy whose body was found on the Fort Worth & Denver tracks, three miles east of Bowie, horribly mangled, Wednesday morning, has been identified by his clothing as Jessie Adkins, the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Adkins of 301 Fahay street.

The father returned from Bowie Saturday afternoon with the body of his son. He believes that the boy was the victim of foul play, but his suspicions are of such an indefinite character that he will not make them public now.

Last Monday Jessie left home, estensibly to borrow a post auger. He did not return at nightfall and when Mr. Adkins made inquiry he found that the boy, in company with two men from Smithfield, was preparing to leave for Quanah. He hurried to the station, but too late to find his son. He learned that the boy had no money with him, and his companions were also without funds.

Thursday he read in The Star-Telegram that an unknown man, apparently 25 years of age, had been found dead three miles from Bowie. The clothes described in the newspaper were those worn by his son. He hurried to Bowie, to find that it was his son who was killed.

No trace of the boy's companions has been found. The father had the mangled body of his son disinterred and the funeral will be held Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at the Bailey cemetery [ed. - Greenwood], White Settlement road. The dead youth is survived by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.

From the Dallas Morning News, Saturday, May 14, 1910, p. 7:

Bowie, Tex., May 13 -- The body of the young man who was killed near here by a Fort Worth and Denver train on the morning of the 11th instant, has been identified by his father and brother, S. J. and John Adkins of 301 Fahey street, Fort Worth. They fully identified his clothing and hat and a harp which was found in his pocket. He was 17 years old. His remains, which now rest in the Elmwood Cemetery, will be removed to Fort Worth.
