The son of James D. Smart and Anne Jane Knighton who are supposedly also buried in Mt. Paron Cemetery with no tombstones. On 12 MAR 1862 James enlisted in Co A, 9th LA Infantry and was 25 years old. He was captured on Nov 7 1863 at Rappahannock Station, VA and was exchanged at which time he rejoined his company. He was wounded and again captured at Fisher's Hill on the 22nd of Sept 1864 and was furloughed He states that he was shot on the right side of his back.
