Justus (one source spells his name Justice) was born on Hewitt Creek, four miles south of the hamlet of Volga City, Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa on January 26, 1874.
He was the youngest child of Joseph and Caroline (Freeman) Bradshaw. Justus had eleven brothers and sisters, three of which died at a young age.
On July 31, 1889? he married Alice Starr in Clayton County. The date may not be accurate as it would suggest Justus was only fifteen when he married. Very little is known about Alice and her family. The young coule had one child: Jessie June Bradshaw who was born June 29, 1900 and died March 16, 1902, living less than two years. Justus spent his short life around Volga and in neighboring Fayette County. He died June 21, 1900 at Taylorville, Fayette County, Iowa only eight days before the birth of his daughter. He was twenty-six year of age. The cause of his death was typhoid fever. Family tradition has Justus interred in the Garretson Cemetery located near the town of Volga. His father, two brothers and a sister are also buried here. His obituary says Taylorsville cemetery which is where some of his wife's family are.
