He is the son of Isaac Strode and Pheobe Dickinson of Kentucky. When he was a young man his mother and nine siblings moved first to Illinois and then to Wisconsin. Around 1847 they settled in Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Although he had land in Wisconsin he came to Texas around 1860. He married Mary Adeline Vann in Collin County in 1861.

He and Mary Adeline had five children (Theodosia, William Nelson Lydia Pardue, Mary Esther, and Minnie Summers). One of his daughters was named for his sister Lydia Strode Phillips who had remained in Wisconsin.

Three of his daughters married Russell brothers, sons of William and Mary Ann Russell. Later generations spoke affectionately of their Russell "double" cousins.
