On March 25, 1868, his wife, Christina died followed by his father on September 26 and his mother on November 10 of the same year. In 14 months, he lost his son, his wife and both parents. He was left with his 2 year old daughter, Anna.
On January 14, 1869, Gerrit married 23 year old, Anna Willemina Geurkink. 10 months later, Anna died on October 17, 1869 giving birth to a stillborn daughter.
In 1871, he married again. Willemina Hendicka Harbers, age 25 years, became his third wife. Willemina gave birth to John Albert on August 7, 1871, Johanna Hendricka on December 8, 1875, Hendricka Gesina on June 9, 1878 and Jennie in May 1882.
In 1883, Gerrit and Willemina with Anna, John, Johanna, Hendicka (Hattie) and Jennie came to the United States. They settled in York, Fillmore, Minnesota where they worked as farmers. Willemina gave birth to two more children, Henry on October 14, 1884 and Grace on November 10, 1887. They resided in York the rest of their lives.
Willemina died on June 1, 1903 at the age of 56 and Gerrit followed 4 months later, at the age of 74.
