Billie Henderson Crawford Cox , 35 years of age, of Murphy, North Carolina, departed this life on Saturday, December 7th, 1946 in the infamous Winecoff Hotel fire in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. She died from head injuries she sustained from hitting the firefighter's net when jumping from the building. Billie and her family were staying in Suite's 1002 and 1004 of the hotel.

Her husband, Dr. Robert Houk "Bob" Cox, who also died in the fire, was a former staff doctor with TVA at Hiwasse and Fontana dam construction sites, and chairman of hometown's polio fund drive.

Billie came to Atlanta, Georgia with her family to go Christmas shopping and take 3 year-old son, Little Bob to see Santa Claus. Little Bob survived the fire thanks to his father's final and courageous act.

Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Kentucky.

THIS IS A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF BILLIE,

If you could see me now you wouldn't shed a tear, Though you may not understand why I'm no longer there. Remember my spirit, that is the real me because I'm still very much alive, I've just been set free. Oh, if you could only see!

I have held our Father's face and I've touched my Savior's hand. All of Heaven's angels rejoiced as I entered the promised land. Beyond the gates of pearl I've walked on the golden streets.

I've touched the walls of jasper and dipped my foot in the crystal sea. The beauty is beyond words and nothing could compare, I've even seen our Lords mansion and someday I'll meet you there. Let Jesus be your guide because "His Word" will show you the way. So please don't cry because we will meet again someday.
