From Holland St.John - "Joseph was the son of Pleasant Bradshaw (who had two wives and sixteen children). No additional information has been found concerning his parents. It is known that he was born April 3, 1825 at Holton, Ripley County, Indiana. His brother Ben Bradshaw drowned while swimming in the Ohio River. Joseph married Caroline Freeman at Janesville, Wisconsin on July 4, 1847 by Charles Jordan, Esquire. Their first child Louisa Maria was born July 16, 1848 at Porter, Wisconsin. A short time later in September of 1849 the young couple and their daughter moved to Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa where Joseph established a farm near Volga City. They were the parents of eleven more children, all born in Clayton County, Iowa. The U S Census of 1860 record that Joseph was farming near Volga City, was thirty-five years of age and his farm had an estimated real estate value of $800. Living at home was Caroline (29), Louisa (11), Annette (8), Savannah (4) and John P. (1). Living next door on an adjacent farm was Nehemiah and his wife Elmena (Freeman) St John and their six children (including my grandfather Winfield Scott St John). Joseph served during the War Between the States in the Regular Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He received a pension. The census of 1870 reveals that he was still farming in Sperry Township, was forty-five years of age and the farm had a value of $2,000. At home included Caroline (29), Savannah (14), Orrin (10), Lucretia (7), Lorena (4) and Inez (2). The St John's and three of their youngest children were still next door. By 1880 the family was still farming in Sperry Township. "Joe" was fifty-five and listed in the census as a laborer. Caroline was forty-eight. Living at home included Lorena (14), Edna Inez (12), Flora (9) and Justin (6). Edna and Flora had attended school during the previous year. Joseph passed away June 15, 1893 of paralysis of the throat and is buried at Volga, Iowa in the Garretson Cemetery. Three of their children: Benjamin, Elmena and John Pleasant were interred in the same cemetery. Caroline, after the death of her husband, traveled extensively, staying and visiting with relatives. In June of 1908 at the age of seventy-six, she went with other relatives to Seattle, Washington. She spent the last three years in Snohomish, Washington. She passed away at the home of her daughter Lucretia Haufle on January 9, 1912. She is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery located in Snohomish, Washington."
