E.E. HILLIGAS FUNERAL HELD
Longtime Resident Succumbs June 5
Funeral services for Earnis E. (Phil) Hilligas, 67, were held Saturday, June 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bramer funeral home with the Rev. E.W.F. Holler officiating. Organ music was played by Mrs. Ed Bartachek.
Burial was in Kent cemetery, with the American Legion conducting services. The pallbearers were Charles Gallagher, Amos Reida, Harry Robeson, Ralph Ramsey, Ross Ramsey and Dan Akery. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Patten and Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Powell were in charge of flowers.
Mr. Hilligas was taken to Veterans hospital in Des Moines June 2, where he suffered a heart attack after his arrival. His death occurred Thursday June 5.
Earnis E. Hilligas, son of David and Mary Ann Hilligas, was born in Poweshiek county Jan. 25, 1885. He spent most of his life in the vicinity of Brooklyn, with the exception of about two and a half years spent in the United States navy during the first World War. He farmed prior to his enlistment and in later years he worked for the Iowa Bridge Co. and on the Poweshiek county bridge crew. He was also night marshal for the town of Brooklyn for several years. He was a member of Francis Gallagher post of the American Legion.
He never married, and for many years had lived in the home of his niece, Mrs. William Roth.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Luetta Brimmer of Brooklyn, and the following half brothers and sisters: Mrs. Mary Hilligas of Chelsea, Mrs. Ella Dyson of Pontiac, Mich., Noah Force of Coon Rapids and John Force of Eugene, Ore. Preceding him in death were his parents, one half sister and three half brothers.
