1st Viscount Grandison. Born the son of Nicholas St John and Elizabeth Blount. He was graduated from Trinity College, Oxford in 1578. He sat as Member of Parliament for Cirencester from 1592 to 1593, and was invested as a Knight in February 1599 at Dublin. He fought in the Battle of Kingsale in 1601 against the Spanish after which he held the office of President of Munster. He sat as M.P. for Plymouth between 1604 and 1606. He was invested as a Privy Counselor, Ireland in 1605 and held the office of Vice President of Connaught. He held the office of General of Ordnance between 1605 and 1614 and sat as M.P. for County Roscommon, Ireland between 1613 and 1615. He held the office of Chief Governor of Ireland between 1616 and 1622, as Lord Deputy during which time he was created 1st Viscount Grandison of Limerick. He was invested as a Privy Counselor in June 1622. He held the office of High Treasurer, of Ireland between 1625 and 1630 during which time he was created 1st Baron Tregoz of Highworth. He married Joan Roydon, but remained childless. Upon his death, his barony became extinct while his vicountcy was retained on a special remainder to the heirs of his niece, Barbara St John whose eldest son, William Villiers, inherited the title.
