High Steward to Queen Elizabeth 1st. William Herbert, 1st Baron Powis. Before 1600, Lord Powis married Lady Eleanor Percy, third daughter of Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland and his wife, Hon. Katherine Neville William was forced from Powis Castle on 2 October 1644, when it was stormed by an attacking parliamentary force led by SIr Thomas Myddleton. He died in London in reduced circumstances. The Herbert family did not return to the castle until after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. William's son Sir Percy Herbert succeeded to the title as 2nd Lord Powis. William Herbert is said to be one the candidates for the identity of 'Mr. W. H.' in the dedication of Shakespeare's Sonnets however he is sometimes confused with his contemporary relative and namesake, William Herbert, the Earl of Pembroke, who is sometimes cited as the most likely candidate.
