When Flora was 8, her father drown while crossing a river in Illinois on his horse. Times being what they were there was no way that Mary Caroline could provide for her two babies and Flora, Alice and John.

Flora was sent to Iowa to live with her uncle, Daniel Clark, while sister Alice was adopted out to a minister and his wife.

Flora grew up during the Civil War and her uncle himself went off to war.

She ran off to Nebraska with a man by the name of George Page Mudge, married him there. He was 13 years her senior and the marriage was not well accept by her uncle Daniel Clark. They did eventually return to the Council Bluff area. Mudge died in 1881 leaving her again somewhat under the care of her uncle once more. Her Uncle Daniel did set her up in a cabin that was probably the first little place that he lived years prior, however in a letter she wrote to her brother she told about it not being plastered, very cold and her children suffered greatly. He threatened with sending her children to the Soldiers Home in Debuque, Iowa and sending her off to Florida to her father-in-law.

It was with all this looming over her she married Lewis, probably only to provide somewhat of a more decent enviorenment for her and her children.
