Jobless and Sick, Dupree Ends Life - Macon Man Apparently Drives Car into "Blind" Road Near Here and Shoots Self - Emmett J. Dupree, 39, of 124 Glenn avenue drove his automobile into a "blind" road near the Case-Fowler Lumber company plant Thursday afternoon and fired a bullet through his right temple, carrying out a threat which his family thought was made in jest Wednesday night. He died instantly. A mill worker passing near the scene called county officers and when they arrived warm blood still was trickling down the side of Mr. Dupree's face. That was about 2 o'clock, it was said. Mr. Dupree had stopped his automobile, a small coach, and had taken a comfortable position on the rear seat. The back of the right front seat had been folded over and his hat and coat were lying across it. His glasses and cigarettes were in his hat.
Health was bad - Lying on the seat, under the folded back, were two notes marked "personal" and Deputy Sheriff Luther J. Stevens delivered them to Mrs. Dupee, the former Miss Doris Haddock. The contents of the notes were not made public. Members of the family attributed Mr. Dupree's action to ill health and his failure to obtain work. He had been in ill heath since he served in the navy during the World war and it had been five or more years, it was said, since he had had permanent employment. Though the family is convinced that Mr. Dupree took his own life, a coroner's inquest will be held in the funeral parlors of Burghard and Connally at 10 o'clock Friday morning.
Threat Remembered - While talking with his family Wednesday night, Mr. Dupree is said to have said something about taking his life if a final effort to obtain work Thursday was unsuccessful. Mrs. Dupree did not take him seriously, however, and assured him everything would be all right. She urged him to stop worrying. Dupree, 39, held that the man took his own life. Mr. Dupree's body was found with a bullet wound in the temple Thursday afternoon I his car on a lonely road northwest of Macon. S. O. Arnett, mill worker who lives on Bellevue boulevard, said that he was walking in the woods near the car when he heard a pistol discharge. Walking to the car he saw Mr. Dupree lying on the rear seat, blood streaming from his temple. In his lifeless hand was a pistol. Deputy Sheriff Luther J. Stevens told of the condition of the body and of the discovery of two notes. One of these marked "personal" was addressed to Mr. Dupree's wife, the former Miss Doris Haddock. This was delivered to Mrs. Dupree unopened. In the other letter Mr. Dupree bade farewell to his friends and told of his intention to take his own life because he had failed to "make a success", it was said.
