Moved to America from Cornwall, England with her husband, James Henry Roberts, Jr. Visit was to see her sister, Martha Ann marry Peter James Matthews in Wisconsin, 1888. She then got so sick from the boat ride to the states, that she and her husband settled in Michigan where they raised their two daughters in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
The family relocated with Laura's sister and brother-in-law to Santa Ana, California in 1894. Unfortunately, a sudden accident killed her husband, James and Laura who was with child at the time of his death, was left to raise their two other daughters on her own. The family remained in Orange County for several generations. After her husband's untimely death in 1894, Laura remarried Joseph H. Mefford, until he died in 1927.
