Anna Bernice Adams Smith Tess was born Oct. 13, 1902, at Leavenworth, WA. Her natural father was Len Adams, and her mother Sarah Ellen Hodgson Adams, They were divorced when Bernice was about six years old. Her mother worked as a housekeeper on a ranch near Mesa, WA - near the Columbia River and Hanford. Her older brother Ernest died as an infant. When she was about ten years old her father, Len, was shot and killed by a man he worked with at a lumber camp. Her mother married Lemuel David Smith, the son of the ranch owner where her mother worked. A half brother, James DuRell Smith, is twelve years younger. The family moved to Milwaukee so that L.D. could study medicine. He attended Marquette Medical School, and she attended Holy Angels and Riverside High School.

When Bernice was 17 they moved to Troy, WI. At the age of 22 she married Howard Tess, February 28, 1925, in Milwaukee. Bernice worked for many years at the Rexall Drugstore in Elkhorn. She loved reading and taking vacation trips.

Her children are Ellen DuRell Tess McKenna and Carol Ann Tess Pierce. Her grandchildren are Susan McKenna, Ann McKenna, Sherry Pierce Thurner, Patricia Pierce Lindrew, Mary Pierce and Dean Pierce.
