Daniel Libby, born in Falmouth, Me., in the year 1742; married, 1 July 1762, Sarah Doughty of Falmouth, a sister of Capt. James Doughty that afterward settled in Gray.

Daniel Libby was one of the earliest settlers of Gray, removing thither probably in 1764. As his wife used to say, there was at that time "not a piece of mowing-field big enough for her to spread her apron on." For a period their provisions had to be all carried from Falmouth, and he used to earn money by working in Falmouth, until his lands became productive. He bought a great deal of wild land, from which he afterward gave each of his sons a farm. He deeded to the town the lot on which are now the cemetery and town-house. His house, where were held the town meetings for some time, was where that of the widow of Edward Maybury now is. In 1778, New Boston, as the place was then called, was incorporated as the town of Gray, and in that year and several following years, Daniel Libby served as selectman. He died after a residence in Gray of more than sixty years, 25 Nov. 1826. His widow died 3 May 1831.

Their children were:

1 William, b. 9 Jan. 1763; m. Jane McCarfrey.
