Clinton--Burlon Daniel "Slim" Scoggins, 88, a retired musician and salesman, died of heart failure Saturday at the G. V. 'Sonny' Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Clinton, with burial in Clinton Cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Scoggins was a French Camp native. He moved to Clinton 32 years ago. He was a member of the 1932 All-State Football Team. "Slim" was known over several decades for his country and western band, The Roaming Cowboys. He was selected to the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame in 1995 for his lifetime contribution to country and western music. His WJDX radio show began in 1939, but World War 11 service in the Army Air Force interrupted it. Afterwards, in addition to radio, he regularly appeared on WLBT-Channel 13 and WJTV-Channel 12 in Jackson. During a business trip he attended a Billy Graham Crusade meeting in Jackson and renewed his religious convictions. A naturally gifted musician, Slim played the guitar, violin, dobro and banjo and was vocal soloist for the band. After retirement, he enjoyed participating in the fiddler's and liar's contest at the annual state fair, where he often won. He was a member of the Joy Makers, a choir at the First Baptiat Church of Clinton.
Survivors include; wife, Lenora Scoggins; sons, Gene Scoggins of Baton Rouge, Jerry Scoggins of Raleigh, N. C. and Jimmy Scoggins of Clinton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
