Professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. Marshall Edelson, M.D He leader in developing the idea and practice of the therapeutic community in psychiatric in-patient settings. He also was known for theoretical writings in which he explored topics such as the boundaries between psychoanalytic theory and social sciences. Author of nine books, including 1988 book, "Psychoanalysis: A Theory in Crisis." He received national attention in his field for his advocacy of scientific rigor in psychoanalysis. He was a leader in developing the idea and practice of the therapeutic community in psychiatric in-patient settings, as well as shaping the study of group behavior and sociotherapy. His education includes a, Bachelors degree from Stanford. Medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago, M.D. from the University of Chicago School of Medicine, Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Department of Psychology and A residency in psychiatry at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Maryland. He was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at University of Oklahoma 1961 to 1964, staff psychiatrist at Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, until 1966 when he joined the Yale facility becoming a full professor of psychiatry in 1976 . At the time of retirement he was also director of education and director of medical studies for the psychiatry department. He received the Heinz Hartmann Award from the New York Psychoanalytic Institute in New York for outstanding work in psychoanalysis, as well as the Stephen Fleck Faculty Award as Exemplary Physician and Clinical Teacher in 1996. The Edith Sabshin Teaching Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2001 and Founders Distinguished Teacher Award from the New England Psychoanalytic Society, in 2002. He leaves his wife of 52 years , Zelda Toll Edelson: a brother, Chuck Edelson of Moshav Orot, Israel: three children , Dr. Jon Edelson of Scarsdale, New York Bec Edelson of Los Angeles; and Dave Tolchinsky of Chicago, and six grandchildren.
