Obituary from the front page of The Dolores Star on May 18, 1917, with great appreciation to fellow Find-a-Graver John Webber, as follows:
"Death of Mrs. C. E. Rentz
Mrs. C. E. Rentz passed away Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Withers, of Summit Ridge, after a short illness. The funeral was held Sunday from the house, Rev. D. B. Wood conducting the services. The remains were laid to rest in the Dolores cemetery.
Sara Ella Varner was born in MacClellan (sic) County, Texas on September 26, 1852, and died near Dolores, Colorado May 12, 1917, aged 64 years, 7 months, and 16 days. She was married to Charles E. Rentz in December, 1868, and to this union eight children were born, five sons and three daughters. She has left to mourn her the husband, two sons, Hugh and Sam, and three daughters, Mrs. J. M. Withers of this place, and Mrs. Gussie Medford and Mrs. Nora Thompson of Fort Worth, Texas, and a host of friends and neighbors.
She professed faith in Christ and united with the Missionary Baptist church in 1869 and has been a constant christian ever since."
Born and raised in McLennan County, Texas, Ella Varner was married to Charles E. Rentz on December 10, 1868 in McLennan County. Sometime after the 1870 US Census they moved from McLennan County to Jack County, Texas, where they are found in the 1880 US Census. By 1900 they have moved to Johnson County, Texas, and very soon after that Census they moved to Montezuma County, Colorado.
Ella Rentz is the mother-in-law of my 2nd cousin, 2 times removed, Temperance Alice "Tempie"Lockett Rentz Pyle, 1888-1970. Mike Lockett
