"Evelen Mae Unbewust, a long-time Leavenworth resident, died Sept 24, 2008, at the age of 87. Born at Harrington, WA, Oct 13, 1920 to Royce and Agnes Williams. They had a wheat ranch half a mile north of Mohler, WA.
Evelyn was born on the family wheat ranch the year women won voting rights. In 1937 she graduated from Harrington High School and then attended Washington State College in Pullman, Whitman County, WA graduating in 1942.
She married John ‘Jack' Unbewust 16 December 1944.
Prior to marrying Jack, she worked in science and medical fields in Spokane, Spokane County, WA. They lived one year in Baltimore, MD, moved back to Harrington, where they farmed for another year and then moved to Pullman, WA where Jack attended WSU and graduated in 1950, with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. They moved to the Winchester Developmental Farm in the Columbia Basin in June of 1950, where Jack did experimental work for WSU and the US Bureau of Reclamation. They watched the ‘desert bloom' as he held many positions with the US BR in Othello and Ephrata, retiring in 1977, as Project Manager of the Columbia Basin Project. From 1968 to 1970, they had a special assignment to Bangkok, Thailand, studying the feasibility of damming the Mekong River for irrigation and flood control.
In Ephrata, she and Jack helped start the First Presbyterian Church, served on the Grant County Family Planning Board, were members of a bridge group and the golf club. While living in Othello, Evelen served as a member of the Othello School Board for 11 years, was instrumental in the opening of the Othello Migrant Day Care Center, worked on Red Cross blood drives, helped organize the Othello ‘Help Thy Neighbor' thrift shop, was a Campfire leader and garden club president. In 1968, she was honored as the Othello Chamber of Commerce ‘Citizen of the Year'.
Upon Jack's retirement, they moved to Leavenworth in 1977. They made their home on the Icicle River, which they dearly loved and had visited since family camping trips in the 1950s. They lived on the Icicle from 1977 until 1992, when they moved into Leavenworth, where she remained until the present, following Jack's death in 1993. She loved Leavenworth and had many friends there. She also kept in touch with family and friends everywhere. Taking her inspiration from Eleanor Roosevelt, and believing in the importance of the brotherhood of man, Evelen was active in many Upper Valley organizations including the Women's Exchange, Community Schools, Upper Valley Arts, Community Cupboard, Habitat for Humanity and a Health District Teen Resiliency Mentoring Project. She also served as an elementary school reading tutor and volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce. She was also involved in three bridge groups, a Book For All Season's book group, the Leavenworth Golf Club, a Friday might dinner group and a morning coffee group. She and a group of quilting friends made and donated many quilts for the residents of the Bruce Hotel. Evelen was also a very proud WSU Cougar and an active Democrat. In her ‘spare time' she loved to read and really enjoyed a good Scrabble game. She and Jack were fortunate to have traveled all over the world and enjoyed meeting local people and learning about their cultures. She loved and was beloved by family and so many friends.
