He was born in Orange Co., NC and died in Parke Co., Indiana. He was married Sept. 10, 1805 at Greenville, TN to Mary Polly Long. He was known as Joseph Finney, Jr., but he was really the III. He served in the War of 1812 with the 2nd Surry (NC) Regiment. He left Surry County, NC in 1816/17 to settle in St. Lawrence County, Indiana. In 1826, he moved to Parke Co.
He was the son of Joseph Finney, Sr. and Rachel Barkley.

Joseph Finney born September 18, 1784, and died in Parke county in 1867. He came to Lawrence county, Indiana, in 1813, and to Parke county in 1826. He served in the war of 1812 under Gen. Jackson. Joseph Finney, Jr., born Sept 18, 1784, Orange County, NC, died Mar 8, 1867, Parke Co., IN., near Annapolis. Fought in War of 1812 in Capt. James Martin's Company of Inf., 7th Regiment, NC Militia, and in 2nd Surry regiment, Surry County. Married in 1805 in Greene County, TN, to Mary (Polly) Long. They lived first in Greene Co., TN, later in Surry County, NC and about 1816 went to Indiana, finally settling for rest of lives in 1826 in Parke County, IN, near town of Annapolis. Their old log house, two stories and large, in which church community meetings were held in hall on second floor in frontier days. is still standing and occupied. Both buried in Linebarger cemetery, S.W. of Annapolis. Their issue, 12 children in all.
