COMPANY E, 358TH INFANTRY

Son of Zena Hutchinson of Barthesville, OK.

(Two census records and Draft Registration all spell his name Merlo, as does the Tablets of the Missing at Suresnes American Cemetery.)

In 1900 he and his parents and four brothers-Clare, Beryl, Alfonzo, Cyril-lived in the Meade District of Tyler County, WV. They had a 26-year-old servant, Mary Mead, born in West Virginia, living with them. His father was the foreman of an oil lease.

In 1910 he and his parents, brother Oscar, and sister Leora lived on a farm on Henrietta Street in Ravenswood, WV.

He was inducted into the Army in Bartlesville on Sept. 19, 1917, and was sent to Camp Travis, Texas, for basic training.

After basic he was assigned to the 343rd Artillery, 90th Infantry Division. The 343rd was sent to Hoboken, N.J., for shipment overseas in June 1918.

Hutchinson died from pneumonia (probably caused by influenza) while onboard the transport ship and was buried at sea.
