He was married Feb 29, 1844, to Elizabeth McCurdy. To this union were born seven children,three whom passed away in early life. Mr. McFarland was among the emigrants of 1852 that made the hazards journey with an ox team to the gold fields of California, remaining there three years. He made the voyage to New York via the ithmus of Panama. He returned to his old home in Illinois in 1855. He moved with family to Corydon Wayne Co. Iowa in 1866 and from there to Kearney Co. Nebraska in 1879. He was among the first settlers of Kearney county, his wife preceded him to her final rest June 17, 1890
Four children remain to cherish his memory,James William of Wood River Neb, Slater McFarland of Orville California, Cornelious of Odessa Neb and Mrs. William Yohe (Mary Sonora) of Kenesaw Neb. with whom he had made his home for the past 17 years. He passed peacefully away after an illness of nearly nine months, which he bore patiently. He became a member of the Christian Church in 1865 at Camp Point,Ill under the preaching of Elder Lowe, and remained a faithful follower of his master,having served the church at Norman Neb as both elder and deacon. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Frish of Holstine and the remains were laid to rest beside his wife in the cemetery at Osco Sept. 7, 1907
