'JAMES W. McFARLAND IS STRICKEN WITH APPLOPLEXY - APRIL 7, 1922
James W McFarland for many years a resident of this community died suddenly on friday afternoon of last week from a stroke of apploplexy, he had been in his usual health up untill the time of his death. He had been up to the home of his daughter,Mrs. Etta Gillette on Friday and was coming down town shortly after noon,when he reached a point near the Owen Mallen home, he was seen to stagger and fall and when those who saw him fall reached his side, he was dead, his sudden death came as a shock to his relatives and to the entire community where he had lived for so many years, he was universally liked and will be missed by the folks of Wood River.
James William McFarland was born Feb. 14, 1845 in Springfeild Illinois, he enlisted as a private in Company 1,153 regiment of Ill infantry and was honorably discharged Sept 4, 1865. He was united in marriage to Miss Alye Ann Kimple at Gordan Iowa in 1867, Eight children were born to this union, 4 boys and 4 girls, three children preceded him. The family moved from Iowa to Nebraska in 1877 and settled on a homestead in Kearney County Neb, in 1890 the family moved to a farm four miles north of Wood River. Mrs. McFarland died June 6, 1894.
On November 14, 1900 he married Mrs. Josephine Glade of Wood River, the family moved in to Wood River in 1906.
He leaves to mourn his departure, wife Josephine, son James Fred McFarland of SLC Utah, Mrs Charles (Lizzie) Fitzgerald of Sacremento Ca, Mrs Frank (Jessie) Coryell of York Ne, Mrs. Laura Etta Gillette and Mrs Emil (Lu Lu) Pearson of Wood River. Two brothers, Cornelious of Kearney and Slater of Oroville Ca. James was preceded in death by three sons, Philip V 1894 @ 2 years (scalded) George W, 1918 @ 45 (flu epidemic) Charles Howard, 1918 @ 28 (flu epidemic)
