He was the son of Benjamin Barnes and Catherine Black Barnes he was married twice first to Jennie Joughin and second to Lillian Sutherland.
He and Jennie had children Ruth Anne, Edward, Hugh and Katheryn.
He moved to Monclova with his mother and in 1868 entered Fayette Normal and Business College in 1882 and graduated om 1883. 1884 to 1887 he graduated from school work in Wooster OH.Hew as in charge of the Business Department of the Shrod Michigan Normal from 1887 to 1890.
James began study of medicine and surgery in the Toledo Medical College in 1890. In 1984 he graduated from Toledo Medical College. He paid for school by working evenings on streetcars. He practiced medicine in Waldron MI 1896 to 1929. He was manager of the Waldron's first telephone exchange, helped build the Church of Christ building. He was the first mayor of the village of Waldron. He had married Jennie JOugin in 1890. Jennie died in 1922 and he married Lillian Sutherland, they both were killed in a car accident on Waldron -Pratville road while on their way to visit a patient in Hudson WI.
His medical bag is at the Hillsdale County Historical Society on the fairgrounds property at Hillsdale MI. He bought a Hutmobile in which Nina Rutledge Jones, whom he had delivered in 1897, rode soon after his purchase.

One day his youngest daughter, Katheryn and a friend of hers were about to experiment with the Dr vibration machine, he walked in on them and told them it was not a toy. The machine is in the Henry Ford Museaum in Dearborn MI along with some of his other instruments.
