Solomon Penrod, one of the oldest pioneers of West Lafayette, and perhaps the oldest native son of Tippecanoe County, died Thursday morning at his home, 524 Harvey Avenue, West Lafayette. Death was caused by pneumonia.
Mr. Penrod was born in this county, September 20, 1837, and his entire life was spent here except for the time he served with the Union forces during the Civil war. He was a carpenter by trade and followed that vocation until he was 85 years of age. For the past six years he had been retired. Mr. Penrod served with Co. D, 140th Indiana Volunteer infantry, during the rebellion.
He was a member of Logan-Taylor post, G. A. R., and the First Methodist church of West Lafayette. His wife died 20 years ago. Surviving are the following children: Mary, Lucy, Sarah, Gertrude, Andrew and Wallace Penrod, all residing at home; Solomon Penrod, Jr., of Chicago, and William H. Penrod, of Columbus, O.; eight grandchildren also survive.
The body was removed to the Templeton funeral home and was to be returned home Thursday evening. Funeral services will be conducted from the house at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Members of Logan-Taylor post, G. A. R., will conduct ritualistic services and Rev. M.C. Hunt, pastor of the First Methodist church of West Lafayette will be in charge of the religious service; burial in Springvale cemetery.
