Funeral services for James Elbert Barnett, 83, of Arp, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Shiloh Road Church of Christ with burial in Roselawn Park in Palestine with Mr. Travis Hunt of Shiloh Church of Christ officiating. Services are under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday at Lloyd James Funeral Home Chapel from 6 – 8 PM.
Pallbearers are Lester Arnold, Phil Russell, Steve Kitchings, Mark Calicutt, Michael Barnett, Brian Barnett and Justin Allen.

Mr. Barnett passed away on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, after a brief illness.

He was born on April. 26, 1927, in Oakwood, Texas, to the late Wade William and Sally Mae Barnett. He grew up and graduated from Oakwood High School and attended and graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College on an athletic scholarship. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1945 to 1946. He was in charge of ship stores.
Mr. Barnett taught agriculture and coached high school football and basketball at Oakwood ISD, Woodhouse ISD and Leverett's Chapel ISD. Mr. Barnett became superintendent of Leverett's Chapel ISD in 1962 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. He was a former president of the Overton Rotary Club.
Mr. Barnett served as district chairman and also was a long time member of the University Interscholastic League Legislative Council. He also refereed high school and college basketball.
He was a long time member of Shiloh Road Church of Christ in Tyler where he served as a greeter. He was also a member of the Prime Timers. Mr. Barnett was a very strong Christian and showed this in his everyday dealings with coworkers, friends, family and everyone he met. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joann C. Barnett on Nov. 9, 1984. He was also preceded in death by his father, Wade William Barnett in 1987 and his mother, Sally in 2002.

He is survived by his 2nd wife, Mary Barnett of Arp, TX.; his two sons, James Barry Barnett of Arp, TX. and William Kevin Barnett of Kilgore; step daughter, Jackie Calicutt of Arp and step son Johnny Allen of Tyler; grandchildren, James Michael Barnett, Brian Wade Barnett, Christopher Barnett, Justin Allen, Amy Allen, Mark Calicutt, LeAnn Calicutt, Mitchell Barnett and Tyler Barnett. Mr. Barnett is also survived by his brother Jack Barnett of Sachese, TX, sisters Lela Wade Coates of Oakwood and Maxine Alexander of Tyler as well as many nieces and nephews.
