Chico Record, Tuesday Morning, February 5, 1907 pg 5 col 3: Death Lays Claim to Lewis E. Day. With little warning, death claimed Lewis E. Day, for many years a resident of Butte county, at his home on Normal avenue, Sunday night, at 10:30 o'clock. The old gentleman was feeling as well as usual Sunday, with the exception of slight complains of pains in his chest during the morning. Sunday evening he seemed well, and retired in a cheerful frame of mind.

Shortly after 10 o'clock however, groans were heard from his room and when others in the home rushed to his room they found him dying. A physician was hurriedly summoned, but the old gentleman had passed away before he arrived, the cause of death being heart trouble.

Lewis Elbridge Day was born in Maine, March 12, 1840. He received his early education and training at his home city and on arriving at his majority was married to Miss Mary Elsmore. Deceased came to California thirty years ago and located at Powellton, Butte county, and followed the pursuit of farming on a small scale. Later he was joined by his wife and children from Maine. Quite a number of years ago he located at West Branch, where he became proprietor of the hotel at that place. From his connection with this hostelry and his kindly nature he made many friends, who will regret to hear of his passing. As old age approached, Mr. Day disposed of his interests at West Branch and seven years ago located in Chico, where he since made his home.

Deceased leaves a wife, three daughters – Mrs. J. Hicks of Seattle, Mrs. F.W. Lake of Oakland and Mrs. T.W. Harris of Chico – and a sister, Mrs. Sheldon Gray of Chico.

The funeral arrangements have not been completed, but it is planned to hold services from the house, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, providing relatives arrive in time. Efforts will be made to secure Rev. W.M. McCart to officiate.
