Elmer was the second son and fourth child of Carl and Emma Johanson/Lundeen Wick, immigrants from Sweden. His father died when he was 13 and his mother when he was 15 years old. He went to work on the farm of Andrew Anderson at the age of 14.

Elmer worked at many jobs in his early years to help out his younger siblings. He served in World War I in Company C 327th Infantry. After the war, he worked for a brief time in Detroit assembling automobiles before returning to the MN area where he grew up.

He married Alma Berge.

Elmer died at the age of 70 years.
