William Dallas Shumate, Jr., 85, of Waynesboro, passed away, Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation, Fishersville.
Born December 23, 1923, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late William Dallas, Sr., and L. Vianna (Coyner) Shumate. Mr. Shumate was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country during WWII. He earned the Silver Star for action in 1944. Mr. Shumate was a member of the Staunton VFW Post 2216, as well as a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro for many years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shumate was preceded in death in by a son, David Shumate; daughter, Rebecca Shumate and a sister, Evelyn Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Helena "Patsy" (Saunders) Shumate, of Waynesboro; son, William Shumate and his wife Pamela, of Stafford, VA; sister, Marianne K. Jensen, of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren, William Lee Shumate and Jennalee Ashby Shumate.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, with Reverend Robert F. Humphrey, officiating.
