Served as Pvt. with the Virginia 10th regiment under Captain Clough Shelton in the Revolutionary War. He fought battles in Pennsylvania and NY states and was captured by the British and held as POW in Philadelphia and NY state. He was released in an exchange of prisoners. Served with Washington at Valley Forge

Enlisted under Capt. Clough Shelton, Col. Stevens, General Scott's Brigade; battle of Germantown; from there to winter quarters at Valley Forge; from there was sent to the small village Penny Packd; in scrimmage with the British he and 14 others were taken prisoner of war; by way of Philadelphia to New York. He was prisoner when battle happened at Monmouth; rejoined regiment at Brunswick and was at battle of Stoney Point. He continued as a private soldier for three years. At the age of 70 he was allowed a pension and after his death, his widow, Barsheba, was allowed his pension. She died Oct. 6, 1860.
