Dabney is the son of Michael Swaim and Elizabeth McGuire. He was born in Surry/Yadkin county. His sisters include Grace Ann, Nancy C, Nancy Melvina, Martha Jane, Priscilla, Tyra and Plutina while his brothers include Ephraim Drake, Michael and Pettis Bloom. Their father, Michael, was blind by 1850.

Dabney married Martha Jane Casstevens on 11 Mar 1859 and they are the parents of Reverend Virgil Monroe Swaim, David S Swaim and Miles B Swaim. Dabney supported the family by farming in Yadkin County, and served in the Confederate Army 75th Regiment, 18th Brigade Militia, 1861-1865.

He was a widower at the time of his death at the asylum. His marker indicates he was the 712th person admitted to the asylum, so he likely arrived shortly before his death there, the asylum having opened in the Spring of 1883..
