He worked for some years with the Rural Electrification Administration. Between 1942 and 1945, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Mediterranean, earning a Bronze Star and five battle stars for action in mostly in Africa, Sicily, and Italy.
After the war, he maintained storage tanks for the American Oil Co., Freeman, MO., and for a time was a boilermaker in Eldorado, KS. He then worked on a transmission line survey crew for Western Union of Chicago. From 1953 until his retirement in 1985, he was a field maintenance worker for Standard Asbestos Insulating Co. in Kansas City.
