Allen Caleb Bales married by bond dated 7 Jan 1841 in Guilford Co., NC, Emily Jane Starbuck. He was dealt with by Springfield Friends Meeting for marriage out of unity, but offered an apology and retained his membership, at least for a time. He was disowned in 1848 by New Garden Friends Meeting, Guilford Co., NC. He and his family headed west during the 1850s, and he seems to have moved frequently before settling in Wayne County, IN. In 1860 he lived in Hendricks County, in 1870, Hancock County, before finally settling in Dublin, IN, by 1880. He was a blacksmith by trade.

He and his wife were the parents of eight children: Caleb Franklin, Jesse Parker, James Volney, Thomas Monroe, John Rommlie, Robert Henry, Jemima Josephine, and George Rohds.
