IRA HOOT
Ira Hoot, an old settler and one of the best known men in this county, died at his home, six miles west of the city, at 8:30 o'clock a.m., Wednesday, march 11, 1908. He had been in failing health for some time, and had been an invalid since November, 1906. His passing was due to, Bright's disease and heart trouble. Mr. Hood was aged sixty-five years, ten months and twenty-seven days.
Ira Hood was born in Centre county, Pennsylvania, April 14, 1842. The days of his young boyhood were spent there and, in 1851, the family moved to Stephenson co., Illinois, where the deceased lived for thirty-two years. He attended the common schools and secured his education there. For three years Mr. Hoot lived in Missouri, and November 3, 1875, he moved his family to Johnson county, locating on a farm near Cook. Later they lived where Carl Brock now resides, east of Tecumseh, and still later they established their home southwest of town. For years they have occupied the farm that constitutes the family homestead.
The deceased was married to Miss Maria Young, in Illinois, June 11, 1865, and the faithful wife survives. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. C.E. Madden of Hendley, Furnas county, J. H. Hoot of Filley, J. N. Hoot, who lives at home, and I. E. Hoot, who lives on a farm near the family home. two brothers and four sisters, a number of more distant relatives and a wide circle of friends mourn the death of this good man.
As a pioneer he contributed his mite to the growth to this county, and he experienced the hardships incidental to the early days. He was a constant christian, having united with the United Brethren church in 1888. Mr. Hoot was a man ever mindful of the welfare of all and was highly honored and respected by those who knew him.
The funeral will be held at his late home this Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E.N. Ballou, pastor of the Crab Orchard United Brethren church. All the children, with their families, are here to attend the obsequies. The burial will be in the Tecumseh cemetery.
