Bessie Elsa Mae Vaughan Yates was the daughter of Charles Wesley Vaughan (1864 - 1927) and Sarah Louisa Scott (Sadie) Vineyard Vaughan (1860 - 1906).

She married Reuben Allen Yates May 17, 1910 and they had six children:

- Ruby Ona Yates (Apr 1 1911 - May 12 1942)
(never married)

- Sadie Louise Yates Keenum (Aug 5 1912 - Mar 9 2005)
m. Augustos Newton (Gussie) Keenum (1909-1972)

- William Allen (Willie) Yates (Nov 22 1913 - Nov 25 1985)
(never married)

- Walter Lee (W.L.) Yates (Apr 28 1916 - Oct 19 2007)
(never married)

- Charles Loyd (Charley) Yates (Mar 24 1919 - May 5 1970)
(never married)

- Cuba Jeane (Jean) Yates Newman (May 23 1921 - Jul 6 1984)
m. Elmer Roy Newman (1922-1998)

Bessie separated from Reuben "Rube" Yates sometime between 1921 and 1928. She raised her children virtually by herself. She did everthing she could to support them. Walter remembered they would move back into town (Commerce) every winter and do laundry for the local college students, and when the spring season of cotton came, they'd move back out to the fields and pick and hoe cotton to support the family. Walter used to joke that he'd lived in every rent house there was on Washington Street in Commerce.

"She was a tough woman that did what needed to be done - WHEN it needed to be done" - a thought from Bessie's grandson, Loyd Newman. He also said she was "as good as any man he knew" (meaning she worked just as hard as any man).

Bessie is buried next to her son, Charles Loyd (Charley) Yates in Rosemound Cemetery - Commerce, Hunt, Texas. Their headstone is two-sided. On the other side of the stone are buried her other two sons, Walter Lee (W. L.) Yates and William Allen (Willie) Yates.
