In the documents found in the Homestead file of Ramoth Sears, he stated that he and his wife first settled on October 1, 1873 on the N1/2 of NE 1/4 Section 4, Township 14, Range 8 W. He stated his improvements as follows: "Built a sod house with board roof, straw and pole stables, dug a well and planted about 1000 forest trees, 46 domestic fruit trees and 200 plum trees and 19 walnut trees and half a mile willow hedge." He also "cultivated about 75 acres of wheat, rye, corn, oats, barley, buckwheat, millet and potatoes." The area was called Burlingame at that time. The 2 witnesses giving affidavits of support were W. J. Copeland and Wm. Foster. The final certificate #3707 was issued October 7, 1880.

Ramoth Sears, an inmate of the poor-house, died Sunday morning aged 91 years, 1 month, 12 days. The immediate cause of his death was asthmatic trouble. He had been at the poor farm since last spring, although he had been an inmate once before. The body was shipped Monday to Palmer, his former residence.

Gage Valley - The body of Ramoth Sears, one of the early settlers near Palmer, and who died near Central City, was brought to Palmer last Monday and interment by the side of his wife, who died about two years ago.
