Obituary - The Perth Courier - Jan.5,1923 -
Sergeant - A telegram received on Tuesday evening, Dec. 19th, 1922, bore the sad news that Mr. John Sergeant had died in the afternoon at three o'clock as a result of injuries received in the mill where he was employed. Mr. Sergeant was in charge of the engines in the Paper Products Co., of Carthage, N.Y. It is thought that he had left the engine room to inquire about the supply of coal for the furnaces, and when passing into the coal department had stepped into the hopper of the coal crusher, which had been left uncovered. One leg was terribly crushed by the rollers before the machine could be stopped. He was removed as quickly as possible and first aid rendered, but death relieved him of his sufferings in half an hour. Two brothers, Thomas and William, both went to Carthage for remains. The funeral took place from the home of the former on Tuesday, Dec. 26th. A public service was conducted by Rev. A.M. Little in the Presbyterian Church, Elphin at two o'clock and was largely attended. Mr. Sergeant was a valued employee of the Paper Products Co., with which he had served for a number of years. A beautiful wreath from the firm and a harp from fellow employees were expressions of the esteem in which he was held, of sorrow at their loss and sympathy for the bereaved. Deceased, whose wife died three years ago, was 52 years of age. Besides his aged mother, he leaves to mourn two young daughters, Ethel and Lena, aged 9 and 7 respectively, four brothers, Robert, of Harper; Thomas of Palmerston; William and Joseph of Elphin; and one sister, Miss Minnie, of Elphin.
