JAMES REID ASPHYXIATED
FORMER WAYNE ASSESSOR FOUND DEAD IN BED WITH HEAD IN POOL OF BLOOD
James Reid, aged 78 years, former Wayne township assessor, was found dead in bed last evening in his room at 39 North Sixth street, death having resulted from asphyxiation some time Friday afternoon, according to Coroner S. Edgar Bond. His body was removed to the funeral parlors of Doan and son. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. T. Mason Byer and three sons, George and Harry Reid of this city and Raleigh Reid of Indianapolis. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

According to the findings of Coroner Bond the doors and windows of the room in which Mr. Reid died, were closed and gas was escaping from a jet when he was found in the bed, wearing his clothes, his head in a pool of blood on his pillow. The coroner stated he believed the blood came from hemorrhage of the nose caused by the lungs being filled with unburned gas and that the man died slowly. He said there was no sign of apoplexy or heart failure.

Not having seen Mr. Reid since one o'clock Friday afternoon, James Manes, a roomer in the house, knocked on Reid's door and after receiving no answer, called for the landlady, Mrs. Stackleather, who with Manes entered the room finding Reid dead on the bed. The coroner was summoned at once.

Mr. Reid was known throughout the county and particularly in Wayne township where he served as assistant, for eight years to former trustee Haworth.

NOTE: His death certificate gives a birth year of 1845, but the date on the stone agrees with his age as given in his obituary.
