Leonard Nicholas Bender, the oldest of the ten children of Edward J. Bender and Clara Hemmer, was born on February 3, 1914, at Cornlea, Nebraska. He received his education in Sacred Heart Parish School there.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from November of 1942 to February of 1946 in the European Sector.

After the war, he owned and operated a tavern and gas station with his father for many years. When they sold the business, he did a little carpenter work. He was also City Clerk of the Village of Cornlea, Nebraska.

Len is living in Cornlea in the same house as his parents. Leonard moved to a nursing home in Madison, NE late 2006.
