He served in the 100th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company H from 1862-65. His regiment served in the Army of Tennessee, during that time, participating in the siege of Vicksburg, the Chattanooga & Knoxville Tennessee Campaigns. The regiment served with Sherman in the capture of Atlanta, subsequently served on Sherman's 'March to the Sea' and the later march through South Carolina and the burning of Columbus, SC. The regiment ended the war in North Carolina and the surrender of Johnson's Army. They later marched to Washington D.C. through Richmond, VA and marched in the Grand Army Review in Washington, prior to their discharge.
