Tippins, Robert Gene, 77, of Sistersville, WV departed this life on September 4, 2010 to be with his Lord and Savior.
He was born March 25, 1933, in Paden City, WV, a son of the late Robert Tippins and Vera Beaver Tippins.
He was a member of the Paden City Church of God. Bob was a life-time member of the Sistersville VFW Post 6327, Sistersville Elks, and the Paden City American Legion Post 67. He loved helping his fellow Veterans and dedicated most of his life to doing community service projects supporting our local veterans. Bob was instrumental in the placement of getting several monuments placed at the Tyler County Court House representing WW II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Civil War as well as several monuments in the tri-county area representing Vietnam War.
Robert was retired from the United States Navy, serving his country for 24 years. Robert (Bob) enlisted in the United States Navy on December 12, 1951. Served duty in Eniwetok and Bikini Atoll in August 1952, and supported #Operation Ivy#, the first H-Bomb test. In March 1953 he departed for Korea and was in the Korean War. He was discharged in December 1955 and reenlisted in October 1960 at Baltimore, Maryland. In March 1966 he reported to PBR School and arrived in Vietnam in May 19, 1966. He was assigned to Cat Lo and started up Riv Div 513; Moved to Vinh Long in July 1966 and departed back to Cat Lo September 1966; Started up Riv Div 532 and moved to My Tho where Sec 532 was located. Robert ran PBR 123 on 119 patrols, 23 firefights before departing for shore duty in September 1969. He returned to Vietnam and was assigned to Sec.515 in November 1969, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received a purple heart for wounds received in Vietnam. Later he was transferred to Rota, Spain for duty and was assigned to VR24. He was reassigned to the Security Department for 3 years before being transferred to the USS Seattle (AOE-3) in January 1974. He retired at Norfolk, Virginia on March 1, 1976. He Returned home to the Sistersville area and went to work at Ormet, retiring in 1988. He established the local business Seaweed Ships Histories in 1988 where he researched and wrote ship histories for Veterans all over the United States.
He is survived by his wife Frances Dailey Tippins; three sons, Robert James (Christine) of Middlebourne, Timothy Lon Tippins of Portsmouth, Va and Todd Robert Tippins (Tonya) of Sistersville, WV; One daughter, Lisa Tippins (Bob) Young, of Jacksonville Beach, Fl.; two stepsons, Timothy (Sarah) Patterson and Daniel Patterson of Middlebourne, and step daughter, Lorie Patterson Watson (John) of Middlebourne. Eleven grandchildren: Kimberly Tippins, April Stevens (Divaris) of Portsmouth, VA, Britnee Tippins of Paden City, Robert Dylan (Bobby) Tippins of Sistersville, Tiffany Hoffman of Misawa, Japan, Andrew Hoffman of Mayport, Fl., Shawna and Justin Dennis, Bryce Eddy, Zackary (Angela) Watson, Curtis and Cody Watson, Kennedy and Lauren Patterson all of Middlebourne. Sisters, Diana Tippins Cecil (Jerry) of Paden City, Nancy Tippins Lemasters (Rick) of Sistersville; One brother Chester (Chuck) Tippins (Betty) of New Martinsville, WV; and several nieces and nephews. Special cousin, Jim Oliver of Anapolis, Md. His very special friends were his pets.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two infant brothers Gary and Jimmy Tippins.
Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 pm at the Paden City Church of God with Rev. Abe Cowgill officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville. Interment will be at Paden Memorial Gardens, Paden City, WV.
