Was in Civil War. Company A, private, 1st Arkansas Calvary, enlisted in Madison County on Nov. 12, 1862. Enlistment shows he was age 25, born 1837, in Pickens Co. South Carolina. Joseph filed for Invalid's pension in 1882. Widow filed for pension in 1921.

Lost his leg some time after returning home Some people previously believed that he lost his leg in the civil war, however, copies of his pension papers an discharge papers state that when he was discharged that he had no wounds or disabilities. According to his records he filed a disability claim for an injury to his hip from a horse falling on him during the war. Also several of these papers state that he was born in 1829,
