Services for Vernon Lane Alt, 62, former owner and publisher of the Fowler Ensign and a police officer, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fowler Presbyterian Church. Mr. Alt died Monday. He was a native of West Virginia and had been a Fowler resident for more than 20 years. Mr. Alt and his wife, Juanita, were the publishers of the Fowler Ensign, a weekly newspaper, for 10 years.

After selling the paper in 1977, he became a police officer for Fowler. He was due to retire in October.

Mr. Alt was also the former editor of the Clovis Independent and Tribune. He also co-owned a paper in Plumas County.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Lanette and Marla, both of San Francisco; his mother, Rosa, of West Virginia; two brothers, Donald of Maryland and Winton of Tennessee.

The family requests that remembrances be sent to the American Heart Association, the Cancer Society or to the donor's favorite charity.
