Elaine Wilcken Nelson, 81, passed away from complications of cancer on September 5, 2010. She was born January 14, 1929 in Abraham, Utah to George Q. Carlisle Wilcken and Vera Ann Humphries. The family would like to express their thanks to Southern Utah Home Health and Hospice and to friends and neighbors for their loving care.
She graduated from Davis High School and later from SUSC with a bachelor's degree in Clothing & Textiles at the age of 50. Elaine's passion for sewing lasted over 65 years. She ran a successful drapery business, taught weaving and tailoring at the college level, created wedding dresses for her daughters and granddaughters, made numerous quilts, home decorations, pieces of jewelry, and most recently led free quilting classes in her community.
She married Richard (Dick) Nelson on August 25, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they served three missions for the Church in Halifax Novo Scotia, Nauvoo, IL, and the Philippines. As a member of the Church she served in various callings as well as shared her love of music. Elaine continued to serve after their missions as a temple worker, visiting teacher and recently, as an extraction worker. As the ward Chorister she loved to encourage the ward members to bear their testimonies through song, a calling she held until her death.
Elaine and Dick loved to design and build their own homes. They built or extensively remodeled more than a dozen homes.
She was preceded in death by her two sisters Beth Alene Bills, Laura Louise Wilcken, and by Dick, her eternal companion. She is survived by her older brother Dee of Cedar City, and sister Dorothy Winburg of Ogden, her children Mark Richard (LorRetta Pyne), Kristeen (Gary) Bybee, Rhea (Thomas) Dearden, Ray Wilcken (Lisa Burr), all of Southern Utah, and Glen Almon (Marcia Stephens) of New York City. She leaves 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 10, 2010 at 11:00 at the Enoch Stake Center (3600 N. Minersville Hwy). Friends may call at the Southern Utah Mortuary on Thursday, September 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.. and from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center on Friday September 10th. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery.
