Samuel was the youngest child of Elder Michael Metcalf Sr and Abiel Colburn. He was probably named for his grandfather, Samuel Colburn.

He married Lois Kingsbury, Jan 5, 1763 in Wrentham, Norfolk Co, Mass. They lived in Franklin, Mass.

He was a Lieutenant in the French & Indian War, and a minuteman in the Rev. War in the Lexington Alarm under Captain Boyd & Colonel Grayton. He was promoted to Sergeant and in 1780 to Lieutenant. He served 7 years in the French & Revolutionary armies.

In 1787 (age 48) he and his family moved to Croydon, NH. The last 25 miles of their journey was on horseback with blazed trees as their only guide through the forest. They settled in the SW part of the town in an area called Brighton (there is a Brighton Rd abt 5 miles S of Pinnacle Cem).

In 1793 there was a spiritual revival in the area. The local preacher wrote: "It hath been a long, dark, and cloudy night with me and the people here; but glory to our God, the cloud is dispersing fast. His work is begun among us....There is a prospect of a glorious reformation in these parts. O may it spread far and wide!"

But I do not have Thomas as one of his children. If he is, he was born 8 months after Obed (which is unlikely) and 6 months before Abel (even more unlikely). Obed and Abel are only 14 months apart.
