Nola was born December 19, 1928 in Gunnison, to Clair H. and Laura Jane Metcalf Coates. She was the third of ten children. She married Don Aston, December 29, 1976 in Elko, Nevada. He preceded her in death.

Nola was raised on the farm and learned to work hard at an early age, working in the fields side by side with her brothers and sisters. After graduation she moved to Salt Lake and worked at various jobs, including as an instructor at Continental Beauty School.
