Boyd Coates

Aurora, Utah

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, the "one and only" real cowboy, Boyd H. Coates, age 89, passed away on Sunday evening, November 10, 2019 in Centerfield, Utah. He was born on the Skunk Ranch in Clarion, Utah to Clarence Hyrum and Laura Jane Metcalf Coates on October 28, 1930.

Boyd spent his childhood "in a sugar beet field" working with his parents and siblings. He met his sweetheart, Wilma Marie Whitlock at a livestock show in 1947. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple, August 14, 1952. To their family, they added four children: Clair, Ann Marie, Julie and Charlie.

Boyd served his country in the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas during the Korean Conflict as a MP (Military Police) and trained the military police dogs. After an honorary discharge, he, Wilma and Clair settled at Wah Wah Ranch working for Wintch Livestock Company. Here they added their other children and spent 45 years working for three generations of Wintch’s: Wilford, Wallace and John. In 1999, he and his family built their own ranch and settled near Aurora, Utah.

Grandpa spent many hours with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and the Wintch children teaching them all to work, and provided much knowledge and pleasure at the same time. He was very generous and known far and wide for his "Grandpa Dollars"!

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; children: Clair K. Coates, Lost Creek; Ann Marie (Carl) Breinholt, Richfield; Julie (Carl) Wanlass, Lost Creek; Charles Hyrum (Tonya) Coates, Aurora; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; siblings: Mary Pavich, Midvale; Zada (James) Gates, Rocklin, CA; Clara Coates, Taylorsville. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Cleve, Clyde, and Guy Coates; sisters: Nola Aston, Laura Fay Coates, Wyona Coates.

Graveside services and interment will be held Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gunnison City Cemetery with military honors by the Gunnison American Legion Post #105 and the Hill Air Force Honor Guard. Friends may call for visitation Wednesday evening from 6 -7 or Thursday morning from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the Aurora 2nd Ward, 85 North Main, Aurora.
