William served as a drummer and fifer in the 1st Regiment of North Carolina troops under Major John Baptist Ashe's Company. He enlisted on May 20, 1777. He moved to Georgia from Orange County North Carolina after the Revolutionary War and was one of the founders of Hebron Presbyterian Church.
