Robert was a son of Captain Laffer Caples and Eliza Smyth, born in Martin Co., Indiana where his father had moved to teach school. For a brief time as a young man, he moved to Butler County, Kansas to marry his sweetheart, Ella Hutson, whom he knew from growing up in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. They were there about a year and returned to Ohio, settling on a farm just outside Newport, Tuscarawas Co. Robert raised dairy cattle there for many years. Ella preceded him in death by about 20 years and his daughter, Ada, lived with him ever after and took care of him in his last illness.
